The Federal Council is extending the national strategy for the prevention of non-communicable diseases such as cancer and diabetes and the strategy for the prevention of addiction until 2028. It has also defined new priorities for both.

In the national strategy for the prevention of non-communicable diseases, three priorities have been defined: strengthening mental health, preventing tobacco and nicotine consumption and preventing overweight and obesity. This was announced by the Federal Council on Wednesday.

In turn, in-depth topics were defined for the national addiction strategy. These include the mixed use of psychoactive substances and behavioral addictions such as addiction to video games.

Equal opportunities for all population groups should also be given greater consideration in the two strategies. Measures and offers to strengthen health literacy must reach everyone - regardless of their language, origin, social status and level of education, it said. According to the Federal Council, a follow-up solution is to be developed in parallel to the implementation of the strategies by 2029.

Non-communicable diseases such as cancer and diabetes, as well as mental illnesses and addictions, are widespread in Switzerland. The former are responsible for around 50 percent of deaths before the age of 70 in men and around 60 percent in women.

Together with musculoskeletal disorders and dementia, they account for around a third of direct healthcare costs. According to the Federal Council, a healthy lifestyle could delay or prevent around half of non-communicable diseases.
