According to Center Party President Gerhard Pfister, political issues are at the top of his party's to-do list for the current legislative period. A second seat in the Federal Council is not currently on the agenda, nor is a change to the magic formula.

"The Federal Council issue is very exciting, but is not a priority," Pfister told the media in Bern on Tuesday. The seven members of the Federal Council have been elected for four years.

For the center, the focus is on positioning itself in the medium term in such a way that a second seat in the government is legitimized. "However, we currently have enough other tasks than dealing with the question of what should happen in the event of a vacancy in the Federal Council."

Pfister also criticized the fact that some Federal Councillors have resigned between elections in the recent past. "I would not recommend any Federal Councillor to resign during the legislative period without particular need." Resignations during the legislature are a "royalist custom" and "no longer in keeping with the times".

Pfister appealed to the Federal Council members' sense of duty. He also sees no point in currently discussing the party-political composition of the Federal Council. "We are not going to tighten up the talks."

The SVP and the FDP didn't want to change anything anyway, according to Pfister. "Only parties that hope to make a profit want to talk, the others don't." However, the topic remains topical because the requirements for the magic formula are mathematically difficult to fulfill.
