Federal Council must review noise protection for military training areas

The Federal Council must review the noise protection regulations for military weapons ranges, firing ranges and training areas. On Wednesday, the Council of States passed a corresponding postulate from its Security Policy Committee by 27 votes to 12.
According to the postulate text of the Security Policy Committee (SIK-S), the Federal Council should examine the extent to which the currently applicable noise protection requirements and exposure limits are stricter for military purposes than for other public tasks and what savings could be achieved by adapting the regulations.
The war in Ukraine has exacerbated the security situation in Europe and in Switzerland, said Werner Salzmann (SVP/BE) on behalf of the SIK-S. The current noise protection requirements would hinder the restoration of the army's defense capability due to noise protection-related restrictions in training. The Federal Council also requested that the postulate be accepted.
A motion to reject the postulate by Céline Vara (NE), member of the Council of States for the Greens, did not stand a chance. Franziska Roth (SP/SO) also pointed out in the Council that the debate on safety should not distract from the fact that noise protection is a guaranteed right of the population.
