The Federal Council rejects the SVP's popular initiative entitled "No 10 million Swiss!". It does not oppose it with a direct counter-proposal or an indirect counter-proposal.
As he announced on Wednesday, he believes that accepting the initiative would have a negative impact on the economy, prosperity and the functioning of society. The initiative would also jeopardize the bilateral path with the EU, writes the national government.
The SVP brought about the initiative with around 114,400 valid signatures. According to the text of the initiative, a new article on "sustainable population development" should be added to the Federal Constitution.
This means that the permanent resident population in Switzerland must not exceed ten million people before 2050. If 9.5 million people live in the country before 2050, the Federal Council and parliament would have to take measures.
