The Federal Council sees a need for action in the promotion of young academics. It wants to support academic career paths - especially for women - with an additional CHF 20 million over four years.
This is what the national government writes in its report "For equal opportunities and the promotion of young academics", which was adopted on Wednesday. This was requested by the National Council's Committee for Science, Education and Culture (WBK-N). The National Council passed a corresponding postulate.
Based on an external baseline report, the report states that a large number of measures have been introduced and implemented to promote young academics. However, further efforts are necessary.
The Swiss University Conference (SHK) has adopted principles for the promotion of young talent and initiated a nationwide cooperation project. The Confederation and cantons support this approach, as the Federal Council wrote.
Supporting female post-doctoral graduates
For the 2025-2028 funding period, the SHK is therefore planning to launch a project coordinated by Swissuniversities with a maximum budget of CHF 20 million. This will be used to further develop and implement action plans for the promotion of early career researchers at universities, with a specific focus on the postdoc phase.
For universities of applied sciences and universities of teacher education, the objective is to further strengthen cooperation with universities in the doctoral phase and to further develop the dual competence profile.
As a second measure, at the end of 2023 the SHK adopted principles for a modern personnel and employment policy for junior academics at universities, a constructive working culture and early career planning.
Other measures discussed are the responsibility of the individual universities and will be recommended to the relevant stakeholders for closer examination, as the Federal Council wrote.
