The 60th Venice Art Biennale opened its doors today, Thursday. Federal Councillor Elisabeth Baume-Schneider inaugurated the Swiss Pavilion. In her speech, she emphasized the confrontation with the Other. "Foreigners Everywhere" is the motto of this year's Biennale.
Elisabeth Baume-Schneider believes that engaging with others is a proven method of opening up to the world and reassuring oneself of one's own identity. This is according to a statement issued by the Federal Department of Home Affairs (FDHA) on Thursday.
The Federal Councillor also used the occasion to meet her counterparts. According to the FDHA, a meeting with Liechtenstein's Culture Minister Manuel Frick took place on Thursday. Further meetings are planned, for example with the Luxembourg Culture Minister Eric Thill and the Italian Culture Minister Gennaro Sangiuliano.
This year's Swiss Pavilion has been designed by the Swiss-Brazilian artist Guerreiro do Divino Amor. The sixth and seventh chapters of the artist's "Superfictional World Atlas" saga are on display. The monumental installation questions national myths, among other things. The Swiss pavilion was organized by the Pro Helvetia cultural foundation.
