Federal Councillor Beat Jans (SP) visited the federal asylum centers in Kreuzlingen TG and Altstätten SG on Monday. Jans announced that measures must be taken to resolve the situation around the federal asylum centers.

Federal Councillor Jans received a call for help from both the canton of St. Gallen and Thurgau. In Kreuzlingen, residents of the federal asylum center for rejected asylum seekers have increasingly complained about noise and garbage in recent weeks. They also expressed security concerns because asylum seekers were choosing to stay in the middle of the neighborhood.

This finally prompted Kreuzlingen's mayor Thomas Niederberger (FDP) to invite Federal Councillor Beat Jans, head of the Federal Department of Justice and Police (FDJP), to visit Kreuzlingen.

Measures need to be worked out in close cooperation, explained Jans at a media conference in Altstätten on Monday. Employees of the federal asylum centers are in regular contact with the police, the public prosecutor's office and the canton.

Concerns taken on board

According to Jans, he has taken up numerous concerns. For example, he held out the prospect of legal measures for dealing with delinquent asylum seekers. Prior to this, St. Gallen cantonal councillor Christof Hartmann (SVP) mentioned the major challenges for the justice system posed by asylum seekers who repeatedly commit crimes. There are also problems finding accommodation for the people allocated by the federal government.

Federal Councillor Jans promised a strategy for overcoming the challenges in the asylum system. He expressed his satisfaction with the exchange. This would lead to a better understanding of the needs and challenges of all those involved.
