After winning the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) in Malmö, Sweden, Nemo met Federal Councillor Beat Jans in Bern on Tuesday. The Federal Councillor described the triumph as a stroke of luck for Switzerland. Improvements for non-binary people are in the works.
The goal must be to live in an open and tolerant society in Switzerland, the Minister of Justice wrote on the short message service X after the meeting. In this society, everyone should be integrated and feel integrated. Jans thanked Nemo and was delighted with the meeting, as reported by his Federal Department of Justice and Police (FDJP).
Nemo campaigns for the rights of non-binary people. According to the FDJP, it is very important for Jans to communicate with those affected. He had taken the opportunity to listen and get an idea of the situation of non-binary people in Switzerland.
Specifically, according to the FDJP, the Federal Office of Justice (FOJ) is currently working on a report and an examination of how the situation of non-binary people can be improved. In a next step, it will involve those affected in order to record the problems and discrimination they face in everyday life.
The FOJ is clarifying measures for improvement. The Federal Office is organizing a workshop on the topic on 1 July. The process is designed to be participatory, as the FDJP went on to say. The wishes and needs of those affected will be taken into account. However, such a process is complex and time-consuming. The final report should be available by summer 2025.
