According to Federal Councillor Albert Rösti, Switzerland needs regulation in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). A kind of appeal body is also needed, as he said in an interview with the NZZ am Sonntag newspaper.
In an interview published on Sunday, the head of the Federal Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications (DETEC) said that his department would submit an assessment to the Federal Council by the middle of next year. It is important that innovation in the field of artificial intelligence is not hindered.
Rösti can imagine Switzerland adopting the rules of the European Union (EU). "But it's actually a global question," said the SVP Federal Councillor. The United Nations could also play a role.
Risk of disinformation
Rösti took part in the first international summit on the security of artificial intelligence last week. There, he emphasized the need to exploit the opportunities offered by AI while at the same time taking appropriate account of the technological, geopolitical and social risks.
All participants had assessed the danger of disinformation as the greatest risk of all, said the media minister in a recent interview. The search for the truth is becoming even more difficult for the media. "We are currently discussing in the Federal Council how we can meet these challenges," said Rösti. They are also monitoring developments in the EU, which is introducing regulation.
