The federal field shooting competition attracted over 135,000 shooters. This was the best result since 2009.
This success underlines the importance of the "biggest shooting festival in the world", the Swiss Shooting Sport Federation continued on Wednesday.
A significant increase was also achieved compared to the previous year. Back then, just under 127,000 people took part. According to the association, in the record year of 2009, not quite 143,000 shooters tried their luck at numerous shooting ranges throughout Switzerland.
This year, 111,000 people took part in the main weekend from May 24 to 26 alone. After the official weekend, an additional 24,527 shooters took part in the field shooting program, in which shooting is permitted until the end of August as part of the federal exercises.
The option of taking part in field shooting over the main weekend was introduced in 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. What was then an emergency solution has long since established itself and proven its worth, according to the press release. "The flexible design of the shooting program is in tune with the times and allows even more people to be part of this special tradition," said association president Luca Filippini in the press release.
The Federal Field Shoot has a tradition stretching back over 130 years. It has been held every year since 1940 and attracts tens of thousands of shooters to shooting houses and shooting ranges every year, where they complete the program with a rifle or pistol. Shooters who reach the age of 10 in the competition year are eligible to take part.
