Personalized license plates for cars and other vehicles will not be available in Switzerland for the time being. The federal government has put a corresponding project to redesign number plates on hold.
The Federal Roads Office (Astra) informed the Keystone-SDA news agency on Tuesday that the introduction of personalized license plates, so-called "vanity plates", has been rejected for the time being due to the high costs and effort involved. The "Blick" newspaper had initially reported.
The redesign with a freely selectable combination of letters and numbers was originally examined because Zurich and Bern will soon run out of six-digit license plates due to the growing number of vehicles. The federal government will now introduce seven-digit numbers there.
The new directive on seven-digit license plates is due to be published this year and will apply to the canton of Zurich and, at some point, the canton of Bern from autumn 2025. According to Astra, all other cantons will not be affected.
