The federal government has spent CHF 35 billion on overcoming the coronavirus crisis. Around 29 billion went towards economic cushioning measures. This is according to a report published by the Federal Council on Wednesday.

The 62-page paper was published by the national government in fulfillment of a postulate approved by the Council of States in 2020. The report shows that the amount of 35 billion is made up of 28.7 billion for economic cushioning measures, 5.3 billion for healthcare expenditure and 0.9 billion for other expenditure.

In the health sector, this refers to expenditure on medical supplies and the assumption of costs for Covid tests, for example. The economic cushioning measures benefited social welfare, the economy, transport and the culture and leisure sector.

According to the report, good general conditions and healthy public finances are the best prerequisites for a resilient economy, the Federal Council wrote in a press release on Wednesday. The cushioning measures were unique "and do not represent a template for future crises".

The economic costs of the coronavirus crisis were also so high due to developments abroad and the population's behavioral adjustments. "This means that even if Switzerland had refrained from taking its own Covid-19 containment measures, there would probably have been an economic slump at home."
