Film composer Howard Shore receives Career Achievement Award

Howard Shore composed the music for "Lord of the Rings", for example. The Zurich Film Festival (ZFF) is now honoring him with the Career Achievement Award for his life's work. He will also preside over the jury for the upcoming film music competition.
The career of Canadian composer Howard Shore is characterized by superlatives: His film scores include those for "Lord of the Rings", "The Hobbit", "Silence of the Lambs", "Philadelphia" and "The Departed". He has worked with directors such as Davis Cronenberg, Martin Scorsese, Penny Burton and Al Pacino.
The music for "Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit" alone earned him three Oscars, four Grammys, two Golden Globes and other awards. In addition to his film compositions, he has also written the opera "The Fly", the piano concerto "Ruin and Memory" and the song cycle "A Palace upon the Ruins".
The ZFF is now honoring his life's work, as the festival announced on Tuesday. As part of its 20th edition next fall, the ZFF will present him with the Career Achievement Award.
Shore himself will be traveling to Zurich to preside over the jury of the 12th International Film Music Competition. This year's task is to score an eight-minute short film for symphony orchestra. The jury will select three compositions to be premiered by the Tonhalle Orchestra. The winner will then be chosen from these.
The 20th ZFF takes place from October 3 to 13. Previous winners of the Career Achievement Award include Geneva filmmaker Michel Merkt, English film composer Rachel Portman and Zurich director Rolf Lyssy.
