An investigation has revealed a total of five cases of sexual abuse by canons of the Congregation of the Great Saint Bernard between 1955 and 1983. After two cases came to light in 2021 and 2022, the congregation opened its secret archives.
This investigation showed that a religious had abused a ten-year-old child between 1955 and 1956, as the religious community announced on Monday. The man could not be identified. Another canon abused a young man in 1983 in Valais. The perpetrator reported himself to the police in the same year.
In addition, a canon, pastor of a parish in central Valais, was found guilty by the criminal justice system in 1971 of sexually molesting at least ten children.
Two cases of sexual abuse of minors by two canons of the Great Saint Bernard had become known in 2021 and 2022. One occurred in the 1980s at the Collège de Champittet in Pully VD against a 12-year-old child, the other in Valais against a young girl. The Congregation reported the two men in 2022.
