The Portuguese-Swiss short film "2720", directed by Basil da Cunha, is one of five short films from Europe nominated for a European Film Award in the short film category. This was announced by the European Film Academy on Wednesday.
"2720" tells the story of a seven-year-old girl who searches for her older brother after a violent police raid. Her fate fatally intersects with that of an ex-convict who has just been released from prison. The story takes place in an illegal slum in Lisbon. The film, which is described as a documentary and fiction, lasts 25 minutes.
In addition, "Clamor" and "The Exploring Girl", both from France, can hope to win an award in the "European Short Film - Prix Vimeo" category, as can "The Man Who Could Not Remain Silent" and "Wander To Wonder". Different countries such as Croatia and France or the Netherlands and France were involved in the latter two.
The European Film Academy also announced a new partnership with the video platform Vimeo. The platform will be the title sponsor of the European Short Film category, the Film Academy added. With this partnership, the Film Academy will present a curated selection of short films from Vimeo on its website.
The European Film Awards will be presented in Switzerland for the first time ever this year, on December 7 in Lucerne. The European Film Academy will announce further nominations on November 5. This will reveal all the films that can hope to win a European Film Award in the various categories.
The European Film Awards have been presented by the European Film Academy, based in Berlin, since 1988. The event takes place there every two years. In other years, it is the turn of other cities throughout Europe.
