Mother's Day is not only important for mothers. For the Swiss flower trade, it is clearly the most important day after Valentine's Day. Five to ten percent of annual sales are generated in connection with Mother's Day.

The estimate is based on import and sales figures, Thomas Bähler from the Association of Swiss Flower Wholesalers told the Keystone-SDA news agency on Tuesday in response to an inquiry.

According to Bähler, the high economic significance of Mother's Day is also due to the fact that individual roses are primarily sold on Valentine's Day. Mothers, on the other hand, are mainly given bouquets.

Here, too, the rose is the best-selling flower. Different varieties and colors are often combined in a bouquet, the organization wrote in a press release.

Total sales of cut flowers in Switzerland amount to around 800 million francs a year. Accordingly, the association estimates sales on Mother's Day at between 40 and 80 million francs. Based on orders placed with importers and wholesalers, it is assumed that sales in 2024 will be at the upper end of the estimate, according to Bähler.
