Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis attended three UN Security Council meetings in New York on Monday. They dealt with the situation in the Middle East, the crisis in Sudan and the war in Ukraine.
At the meeting on the situation in the Middle East, Mr. Cassis called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and the release of all hostages. A ceasefire must also be achieved in Lebanon. The political solution for peace in the Middle East is well known, said Cassis. It is the two-state solution, which offers Israelis and Palestinians the prospect of living in peace and security.
Engaging the young generation
In order to create lasting peace in the Middle East, it is imperative to invest in young people. "I am convinced that the new generation, which is striving for a perspective of life - and not a perspective of death - is capable of taking the path of reconciliation and combating hatred and extremism," said Cassis.
The Federal Council also recalled that the two laws passed by Israel against the UNRWA aid organization at the end of October were largely incompatible with international law and jeopardized humanitarian aid for the civilian population.
Russia against Sudan resolution
The Council also voted on a resolution to help bring peace to civil war-torn Sudan. 14 Council members voted in favor of the resolution introduced by Great Britain and Sierra Leone. However, Russia vetoed it. In the Council, Cassis expressed Switzerland's regret at the failure of the resolution.
This afternoon (local time), the Council met to discuss the war against Ukraine, which has now been going on for over 1000 days. The Council is focusing on the latest escalations in the war zone and the global consequences of the conflict, such as the destabilization of global food and energy security.
