A trial began at the Basel Criminal Court on Wednesday against a former cashier accused of defrauding the Fondation Beyeler in Riehen BS of almost one million Swiss francs over eleven years. Two witnesses testified against the accused. A former cashier testified that he had discovered unauthorized cancellations of ticket sales made under his name in 2019, and the former supervisor of the museum confirmed that there had been suspicious activity due to the high number of emergency tickets being sold. The accused made only marginal statements regarding the high cash deposits to her account and the high expenses for travel and clothing. She claimed that she had advanced the money for the purchase of four cars, although she did not have a driver's license. According to the indictment, the accused had pocketed at least 986,126 Swiss francs by using various tricks, such as selling tickets without recording them, double-selling tickets, and canceling regular ticket sales and taking the money from the cash register. She is charged with commercial theft, multiple embezzlement, multiple forgery, and money laundering. The trial is scheduled for three days.nn
