The trial against the former head of the Thurgau Veterinary Office and three of his former employees is scheduled for January 24 at the Frauenfeld District Court. The defendants are accused of various misconduct in the Hefenhofen animal welfare case.

The defendants are facing charges of negligence in connection with the Hefenhofen animal welfare case from 2017. The charges range from abuse of office, favoritism and cruelty to animals to damage to creditors and fraudulent mismanagement to attempted coercion.

The sentence demanded will only be announced at the start of the trial. Ten days have been set aside for the trial between January 24 and the scheduled sentencing hearing on March 19, 2024.

Shock images got the animal welfare case rolling

In summer 2017, photos of emaciated and dead horses from Hefenhofen got the case rolling.

The farmer responsible for this was brought before the Arbon District Court in March on charges including multiple counts of cruelty to animals. The court acquitted the former horse breeder of numerous charges.

Most of the "evidence" presented, with which the public prosecutor's office wanted to put the previously convicted animal abuser behind bars for more than six years, could not be used, the ruling stated. The public prosecutor's office appealed against this.
