A major onset of winter with lots of fresh snow is expected in the mountains on the fourth Advent. MeteoSwiss raises the danger level to 3 in parts of the Alps. Particularly affected are the northern slopes of the Alps, Valais with the exception of the southern valleys, parts of central Switzerland, Sarganserland, Liechtenstein, Davos GR and Klosters GR.

The Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology (MeteoSwiss) writes on Friday that intense and partly persistent precipitation is likely to begin on Sunday night. At low altitudes, the precipitation will initially fall in the form of rain. From midday on Sunday, however, the snow line will fall continuously down to low altitudes. In the Alps, the snowfall will continue until Tuesday morning, especially on the northern slopes of the Alps, the report continued.

In the areas with warning level 3, there is a high probability of 80 to 130 cm of fresh snow above around 1500 meters. In these areas, the fresh snow could be heavily displaced by stormy winds, increasing the risk of avalanches.

In the neighboring inner-Alpine areas as well as in the northern foothills of the Alps and at medium altitudes between 800 and 1500 meters, 40 to 80 cm of snow is expected, and 10 to 40 cm at lower altitudes.
