There will be a reshuffle in the Federal Administration. Nora Bertschi is to become the new Secretary General of the Federal Department of Justice and Police (FDJP). The current FDJP Secretary General Stefan Hostettler follows his boss Elisabeth Baume-Schneider to the Federal Department of Home Affairs (FDHA).

The Federal Council appointed Bertschi and Hostettler at its meeting on Wednesday, as announced. Both will assume their new functions on February 1.

Bertschi has already worked with Justice Minister Beat Jans, who was President of the Government of the Canton of Basel-Stadt until his election to the national government. Since May 2021, she has been Co-Secretary General of the canton's Presidential Department - together with Sebastian Kölliker. The latter will now be her deputy in the FDJP.

The 55-year-old Hostettler is taking over his post in the FDHA from Lukas Gresch. According to the state government's communiqué, the latter will pursue a new career.

In December, Gresch ran unsuccessfully to become the new Federal Chancellor and successor to Walter Thurnherr. The Federal Assembly preferred GLP candidate Viktor Rossi to Gresch, who had no party affiliation.

The new FDJP Secretary General Bertschi has a doctorate in law. She supplemented her law degree with management training at the University of St. Gallen.

Her predecessor in the Department of Justice and Police, the future FDHA Secretary General Hostettler, is a business economist and communication scientist. He also holds a Master's degree in Communication Management and Leadership. He has worked in the Federal Administration since 2016. Prior to his time as FDJP Secretary General, he was Deputy Secretary General of the Federal Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications (DETEC) and the FDJP.

Before joining the Federal Administration, Hostettler worked for the SP and as a journalist for the "Tages-Anzeiger" and the former Swiss Press Agency, now the Keystone-SDA news agency.
