Following the flooding in the Skyguide air traffic control building, Geneva Airport was gradually able to restart operations on Wednesday morning.
The exact cause of the flooding in the basement of the air traffic control center in Geneva following the heavy thunderstorms on Tuesday evening is the subject of ongoing investigations, skyguide announced. Shortly after 10 pm, air traffic control decided to close the airspace for two hours. Because the cooling system for servers had failed, there was a risk of overheating. According to skyguide, the cooling system was put back into operation in the early hours of the morning.
Meanwhile, capacity in the airspace controlled from Geneva was increased to 70 percent, according to skyguide. Around 30 flights to Geneva and 22 departures were canceled during the night.
Around 100 passengers were stranded in Terminal 2 of the airport. They were looked after by a crisis team. Cots, food and drinks were provided. Skyguide regretted the inconvenience caused to passengers and airlines.
