Business circles in Geneva expressed their disappointment on Friday at the city's unsuccessful bid to host the Eurovision Song Contest 2025. Vincent Subilia, Director General of the Geneva Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Services (CCIG), recalled that the expected economic impact on the location was considerable.
Geneva's bid was solid in every respect, said Subilia when asked by the Keystone-SDA news agency. But unfortunately, Geneva came away empty-handed.
Subilia, who is also a member of parliament for the FDP, recalls the very broad support for the bid from the parties in the Grand Council. Parliament had almost unanimously passed a resolution to do everything possible to ensure that Geneva could host the event. The authorities also committed to providing CHF 30 million for the event.
The FDP MP was also of the opinion that the Young SVP's threat of a referendum had "certainly put a strain" on Geneva's candidacy. He called on the Geneva hoteliers to present the Young SVP with the bill for the lost revenue. Subilia added that they must now continue to work to make Geneva more attractive.
