Germany is donating 100,000 doses of vaccine to the affected countries in the fight against the Mpox disease in Africa. The vaccine is to come from Bundeswehr stocks, said government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit in Berlin.

In the medium term, Europe's largest economy, together with European partners, will also support the African Union in setting up local vaccine production. The route by which the vaccine is to reach the affected regions has not yet been finalized.

The German government is also supporting the affected countries, such as the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with money via the World Health Organization (WHO) and is also contributing expertise from German specialist institutions. It is already known that a mobile laboratory for detecting the virus is to be delivered to the Democratic Republic of Congo. Experts are being trained to recognize symptoms of the disease and educate the population about prevention measures.

When asked last week, the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health stated that there are currently no plans to provide vaccines to the countries affected by Mpox.

The WHO recently declared the highest alert level due to the Mpox outbreaks in Africa and a new, possibly more dangerous variant. In addition to the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi and neighboring countries are also affected.
