By voting no to the biodiversity initiative, Switzerland has missed an opportunity to protect its natural heritage. This is essential for the economy and quality of life, wrote the Green Liberal Party (GLP) on Sunday. However, the party does not believe that the people have rejected the protection of biodiversity in principle.
The strong emphasis on the protection of buildings and landscapes in particular is likely to have contributed to the rejection, explained National Councillor Beat Flach (GLP/AG) in a press release. Biodiversity protection and the expansion of renewable energies should go hand in hand.
Although the National Council had drawn up a balanced indirect counter-proposal, this had failed in the Council of States. The GLP stated that it would continue to seek solutions that reconcile biodiversity and economic development.
The Young Greens responded to the rejection with "now more than ever" and promoted their environmental responsibility initiative. This is intended to ensure the protection of the basis of life. The opponents' campaign was full of false statements, the party wrote, citing the claim that 30 percent of the country would become protected areas. The Young Greens condemned these tendencies to "impede the formation of public opinion".
