Rail operations through the Gotthard Base Tunnel can resume in full on September 2. According to SBB, the repair work in the western tube of the tunnel is on track.
Since the derailment of a freight train in the Gotthard Base Tunnel on August 10, 2023, SBB has been working at full speed to repair the tunnel. This is continuing as planned, SBB announced to the media in Bern on Thursday.
The next step was test and trial operation. During test operation, empty trains are used to test the new systems, in particular the track, and to check the interaction of all systems.
SBB continues to estimate the material damage caused by the train derailment in August 2023, including loss of earnings, at around CHF 150 million.
