The Gotthard Base Tunnel will be partially closed on several days in January and August 2025 due to renovation work. During this time, passenger traffic will be rerouted via the Gotthard panoramic route.

Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) announced on Thursday that this would lead to longer service times of around one hour between January 13 and 24. The trinational trains on the Milan-Zurich-Frankfurt route as well as the first IC connection from Chiasso to the north (5.30 a.m.) and the last IC connection from Zurich to the south (11.05 p.m.) are excluded.

There will be additional restrictions on December 29, 2024 and from January 3 to 7. Individual IC and EC trains will be canceled, and between 3 and 7 January all IC2 trains will stop in Flüelen instead of Altdorf UR, the statement added.

According to SBB, maintenance work usually takes place at eight-hour intervals during the January weekends. However, these intervals are not sufficient for certain work, especially when systems have reached the end of their service life. For example, the tunnel radio needs to be replaced.
