The Gotthard Road Tunnel was closed on Sunday evening due to a crack in the tunnel ceiling. Pieces of concrete fell onto the road, according to the Federal Roads Office (Astra). No people were injured. An initial assessment showed a 25-meter-long crack in the intermediate ceiling, as Astra reported in the night of Monday. The cause and the exact damage were not yet clarified at the time of the announcement. It was not yet known how long the tunnel would remain closed. Traffic was diverted via the San Bernardino route and the Gotthard Pass road. The responsible parties were working with high pressure to repair the damage and to analyse the cause. The Gotthard Road Tunnel had to be closed for safety reasons shortly after 4 pm on Sunday. The concrete pieces had detached near the northern tunnel portal. As a result, cars were queued up on both sides, in the north and in the south, for several kilometres.nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn
