Gotthard tunnel temporarily closed due to car collision

The Gotthard Tunnel was temporarily closed on Sunday afternoon due to a car accident. The reason: shortly after midday, two cars collided head-on not far from the southern entrance to the tunnel near Airolo. The two drivers and a passenger were taken to hospital with injuries.
According to the Ticino cantonal police, the accident occurred because a 77-year-old man from the canton of St. Gallen was traveling northbound in the opposite lane at around 12.20 pm. He collided with the car of a 61-year-old man from the canton of Nidwalden around one hundred meters before the southern entrance to the tunnel. The tunnel was closed to traffic for around one and a half hours.
