The canton of Graubünden has accepted the suspensive effect of the appeals lodged by three nature conservation organizations against the decimation of wolf packs. As Graubünden cantonal councillor Carmelia Maissen (center) explained on Tuesday, the canton will not appeal a corresponding ruling by the Federal Administrative Court to the Federal Supreme Court.
"By the time the Federal Supreme Court had ruled, January 31 would have passed and with it the regulatory period," said the head of the Department of Infrastructure, Energy and Mobility at the Graubünden government's monthly media meeting in Chur. The canton had therefore decided not to appeal the ruling.
In November 2023, the cantons of Graubünden and Valais ordered the preventive culling of a large number of wolves, including the elimination of entire packs. They had previously received approval from the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) to shoot these large carnivores by the end of January 2024.
Several nature conservation organizations lodged an appeal against this. As is usually the case, this had a suspensive effect. In December, the two cantons applied for the suspensive effect to be lifted due to the "high extent of the damage". The Federal Administrative Court did not grant this request. "We have lost our case," said Maissen.
