The environmental organization Greenpeace has lodged an appeal with the Federal Administrative Court to obtain more transparency in the information on the condition of the reactor pressure vessels at the Beznau nuclear power plant in the canton of Aargau. At issue is the question of how many passages the nuclear supervisory authority Ensi may black out in a report.
Specifically, Greenpeace wants to see the audit results that the energy company Axpo submitted to the Swiss Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate (Ensi) in 2010, as the environmental organization announced on Tuesday. To date, Ensi and the nuclear power plant operator Axpo have only published a brief summary of these investigations.
Axpo announced last week that it intends to operate the two Beznau reactors until 2033. According to Greenpeace, this has "further increased" public interest in the test results. The environmental organization accuses Ensi and Axpo of using "all means and tricks" to conceal the exact condition of the world's oldest nuclear power plant.
This is the third time Greenpeace has appealed to the Federal Administrative Court in this matter. The court has twice ruled that documents containing information about the reactor pressure vessels must be published with as little text redacted as possible, Greenpeace stated.
According to its latest ruling, the Ensi again wanted to withhold most of the information. It is only releasing a few pages for publication. The supervisory authority refers to the Goods Control Act, which regulates the handling of goods that can be used for both civilian and military purposes.
