Gymnasium to last at least four years throughout Switzerland in future

In future, all grammar school courses throughout Switzerland should last at least four years. Cantons that have to switch to a four-year Gymnasium will have a maximum of ten years to do so. This is provided for in the new framework curriculum for baccalaureate schools.
The Conference of Cantonal Directors of Education (EDK) approved a corresponding Swiss-wide framework curriculum for baccalaureate schools, according to a press release issued on Thursday. It replaces the previous plan from 1994.
All revised texts come into force on August 1. The cantons have until the beginning of the 2029/30 school year to implement them in practice. The rules for passing the Matura remain unchanged.
Among other things, the new framework curriculum provides for a mandatory minimum duration of four years for baccalaureate schools. The cantons of Bern (French-speaking part), Jura, Neuchâtel and Vaud, which have to switch to a four-year baccalaureate, have a maximum of ten years to implement this.
As of August 1, high schools must devote at least three percent of teaching time to interdisciplinary work. The new framework curriculum also aims to promote equal opportunities, exchange and mobility as well as commitment to the common good.
"The aim of the total revision was to make the baccalaureate more comparable throughout Switzerland and to guarantee examination-free access to university in the long term," said EDK President Silvia Steiner in the press release.
