Following the announcement by Thun-based solar manufacturer Meyer Burger that it would close a plant in Saxony if necessary, German Economics Minister Robert Habeck (Greens) is insisting on state aid for the solar industry in Germany. "I am very much in favor of ensuring that we have a basis for solar production in Germany," said Habeck in Berlin on Monday. We must therefore "clear the way for the resilience bonus in Solar Package 1".

The resilience bonus is intended to increase the feed-in tariff for producers of solar power who buy products from Europe. The SPD and Greens in the federal government want to include the bonus in Solar Package 1, while the FDP is against it.

Habeck said on Monday that the vast majority of solar panels installed in Germany come from China. Continuing to have the production and know-how in Germany offered security - and this security had its price. A solution "must come quickly so that it is not too late", warned the minister.

The solar cell manufacturer Meyer Burger warned on Friday that without subsidies it would have to close its solar module plant in Freiberg, Saxony, and relocate part of its production to the USA.
