An accident involving four cars occurred in the Vedeggio-Cassarate tunnel near Lugano on Thursday afternoon. An 86-year-old man was moderately injured and an 80-year-old woman was seriously injured.

The pile-up was caused by a 49-year-old driver, according to the Ticino cantonal police. For reasons that are still unclear, he lost control of his car about a third of the way through the tunnel. He crossed into the oncoming lane and collided head-on with the car of a 66-year-old man.

Two other cars were affected by the violent collision. The person who caused the accident suffered minor injuries, as did a 66-year-old passenger who was sitting in the car that was hit head-on. They were also taken to hospital. The other people involved in the accident were largely uninjured.
