The start of the summer holidays in the canton of Zurich brought a high number of passengers to Zurich Airport on Saturday. The Euroairport Basel also expected peak values for the third weekend of July. According to Zurich Airport spokesperson Elena Stern, the day ran smoothly with no long waiting times or other problems. On peak days, the airport expects around 100,000 passengers during the summer holidays. On Saturday, 90% of passengers waited less than 10 minutes before the security control. This was achieved thanks to improved passenger information and additional personnel to support security control during the summer months. The Euroairport in Basel also reported a high number of passengers, expecting 87,600 passengers over the weekend, 10,000 more than the first two weekends of July. Due to the trinational catchment area, the summer holidays at the Euroairport were extended by several weeks, resulting in less peak times. On average, passengers waited 8-12 minutes at the security control and 20-25 minutes at the passport control after arrival. Meanwhile, several Italian airports were affected by strikes, causing Swiss Airlines to cancel 10 return flights to Italy, 9 of which were from Zurich Airport and one from Geneva Airport. The affected passengers were informed in time and no additional flights had to be cancelled.
