The Swiss hotel industry recorded more overnight stays again in October. Following the decline in September, additional guests from abroad helped to reverse the trend. The industry thus achieved a new record for the summer season and remains on course for a record for the year as a whole.

In October, the number of overnight stays rose by 0.3% year-on-year to 3.34 million, as reported by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) on Thursday. In the previous month of September, a decline of 1.4 percent was recorded for the first time in a long time.

The increase in October is thanks to foreign guests. Overnight stays increased by 3.4 percent compared to the same month last year. In contrast, the number of overnight stays by Swiss guests fell by 2.4 percent.

Summer season record

Demand increased in all months of the summer season (May to October) with the exception of September. A total of 24.4 million overnight stays were recorded. This not only represents an increase of 1.6% compared to the previous year, but also the highest absolute figure ever achieved in a summer season.

The record is thanks to foreign guests. The increase here was 3.9% to 13.0 million, while domestic demand fell by 0.8% to 11.3 million.

From January to October, the industry recorded 37.0 million overnight stays (+1.7%). It thus remains on course to beat the previous year's record number of overnight stays. In 2023, the Swiss hotel industry broke the 40 million mark for the first time with 41.8 million overnight stays.
