The Cartoonmuseum Basel presents a comprehensive retrospective of Dominique Goblet's profound comic cosmos. The Belgian artist's original works go beyond the stylistic framework of comic art.

In a surreal evening atmosphere, a cow lies on the lawn, surrounded by huge, hemispherical bales of straw. The pale greenish light lends an apocalyptic shimmer to what is actually a peaceful mood in terms of form and content.

This is a page from the graphic novel "Ostende", published in 2021. In it, Dominique Goblet poses questions about space and time against the backdrop of wonderfully and sensually engagingly painted landscapes, which easily unhinge reality.

It is one of many landscape paintings by the Belgian artist, who was born in 1967. In her books, landscapes, dark forests and the vast sea are both mysterious backdrops and symbols of emotional worlds, writes the Cartoonmuseum Basel.

A pointedly female perspective

Until the end of May, the museum is showing a retrospective of the extraordinary oeuvre of the comic artist, who is particularly celebrated in the French-speaking world. From a pointedly feminine perspective, she digs deep into the psyche of people in her works - sometimes even into the abysses of her own biography.

For example, in her 2007 book "So tun als ob heisst lügen" ("Faire semblant c'est mentir"). Here she emphasizes the problematic relationships with her alcoholic father and her mother, who was overly affectionate to the point of abuse.

She drew a very personal, if perhaps not quite so autobiographical, portrait for the book "Bei Gefallen auch mehr ...", which she published in 2014 in collaboration with the Berlin-based illustrator and author Kai Pfeiffer. It is about a single mother who gets lost in the jungle of online dating in her search for a partner.

The Cartoonmuseum is showing original drawings, paintings in gouache, landscapes, portraits and room installations with ceramic works by the versatile artist, whose horizons extend far beyond the covers of her graphic novels. The exhibition "Dominique Goblet. Shoals" can be seen from March 2 to May 26.
