Even if the cool temperatures at the beginning of the week make it hard to imagine swimming fun: The outdoor pool season starts in many Swiss swimming pools on Ascension Day and the following weekend. And it's also getting warmer in time for the opening of the season.

In Bern, for example, the Marzili, Weyermannshaus, Ka-We-De and Lorraine outdoor pools will open next Saturday, as the city announced on Tuesday. One exception is the renovated Wylerbad: it will not open its gates until June 26.

Staggered start to the season

In Basel, however, the outdoor pool season began on April 27 with the opening of the heated sports pool in the Gartenbad St. Jakob, according to the website of the canton of Basel-Stadt. The family pool and the slide pool will open on Saturday - as will the Bachgraben garden pool. The Eglisee garden pool will follow a week later.

In Zurich, some water lovers have been able to venture into the water since mid-April: according to the city, the Seebach outdoor pool and the Utoquai lakeside pool have been open since April 13. The Letzigraben outdoor pool followed on May 1. On Ascension Day, the season opens in numerous other pools, including the Oberer Letten lido, the Mythenquai lido and the Tiefenbrunnen and Wollishofen lido.

The Lido in Lucerne opens on Saturday. In contrast, the Seebad has been open since May 1. Swimming enthusiasts in Glarus need a little patience: the summer season at the Ygruben outdoor pool starts on Monday. The Goldigen outdoor pool in Netstal GL is currently being renovated. The work is expected to last until mid-June, according to the municipality of Glarus. In Chur, on the other hand, the Oberere Au and Sand outdoor pools will open on Saturday.

Spring-like weekend in sight

The situation in French-speaking Switzerland is mixed: in Lausanne and Sion, the outdoor pools will not open until 18 May, while in Fribourg and Delsberg they will open next Saturday. In the Bains du Pâquis in Geneva, access to the lake is possible all year round - but outside the summer season without supervision. Depending on the weather, "normal" summer operations are scheduled to start in the middle of the week or next weekend.

The water temperatures on the northern side of the Alps were not exactly inviting, at least not on Tuesday: the weather service Meteonews reported widespread temperatures of between 10 and 13 degrees for the larger lakes on the northern side of the Alps.

Spring fever is likely to set in, at least on the sunbathing lawns. On the Central Plateau and in the south, the temperature will rise to 20 degrees or more on all four days of the extended weekend, SRF Meteo, the weather editorial office of Swiss radio and television SRF, wrote on its website on Tuesday. In many places it will be warmest on Saturday with 22 to 25 degrees.
