Swiss industrial companies still have great untapped energy-saving potential. This is shown in a report commissioned by the Swiss government. According to the paper, around 800 companies from sectors with high energy consumption are addressed.

Around a fifth of energy consumption in Switzerland is used by industry, as the Swiss Federal Office of Energy (SFOE) reported on Monday. Since 2011, the SFOE has been supporting industrial and commercial companies in optimizing their energy efficiency with a specific funding programme and so-called pinch analyses.

Energy flows in the company are examined for their potential for energy savings and for switching to renewable energies. Such analyses have been carried out in 220 companies to date.

Thanks to the measures recommended after the audit, audited companies were able to save an average of around twenty percent of the energy consumed for heating processes. This was shown by an evaluation of 78 of these companies. According to the report, a further 800 energy-intensive companies could benefit from energy analyses, as the SFOE writes.

The focus here is on process heat, which consumes a lot of energy. Process heat is required, for example, to generate steam or hot water or for drying processes. Most of the process heat - around 85% - is provided by fossil fuels.

The national "Process Integration/PinCH" support centers are operated by the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSLU) in German-speaking Switzerland and by the Haute Ecole d'Ingénierie et de Gestion du Canton de Vaud (HEIG-VD) in French-speaking Switzerland. Companies and other interested parties can contact these centers.
