The 39th Fribourg International Film Festival (FIFF) is dedicating its Genre Cinema section to crime films from around the world under the title "Murders and Mysteries".
One of the international crime films will be "Santosh" (2024) by director Sandhya Suri from India. It is about a widow who takes over her deceased husband's job. She finds herself in the chauvinistic environment of the moral police. It is remarkable how the film "holds up a mirror to the culture of the country", said Thierry Jobin, artistic director of the FIFF, in a press release on Wednesday.
The FIFF also plans to show the Nepalese crime thriller "Pooja, Sir" (2024) by Deepak Rauniyar. The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival this summer. It takes a close look at the norms of Nepalese society by having the classic figure of the male inspector played by a lesbian policewoman.
In addition, it has been a tradition at the FIFF for five years that the audience can choose five films from a selection of fifty. This time, the selection ranges from classics such as "Rear Window" (1954) by Alfred Hitchcock or Sidney Lumet's film adaptation "Murder on the Orient Express" (1974) to cult films such as "Usual Suspects" (1995) by Bryan Singer or "Seven" (1995) by David Fincher.
The 39th edition of the FIFF will take place from March 21 to 30, 2025. The complete program will be announced on 5 March.
