The Aargau public prosecutor's office has opened a criminal investigation into attempted murder against a 43-year-old man who attacked and injured passers-by in Zofingen AG on Wednesday. The perpetrator, who had only recently entered Switzerland, was mentally unstable.
The identity of the accused has now been established, the public prosecutor's office announced on Thursday. The 43-year-old Spaniard had probably only entered Switzerland a few days ago. He is also believed to have inflicted injuries on himself and exhibited mentally abnormal behavior. There were no indications of a terrorist background.
Shortly after 4 p.m., the man began to randomly attack passers-by at Zofingen railroad station with various objects. He later barricaded himself in a detached house, which was surrounded by special police forces. They were able to arrest the suspect shortly afterwards. Some of the victims were seriously injured but, according to the public prosecutor's office, their lives are in no danger.
