Iran's Foreign Ministry has announced a new round of talks with EU countries. Representatives of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Germany, France and Great Britain are to meet in Geneva next Friday, according to Iranian media reports. There was initially no confirmation from other sources.
According to Baghai, the talks on November 29 will follow on from those held on the fringes of the last UN General Assembly at the end of September. The war in the Middle East and the nuclear program are to be discussed.
The dispute over Iran's nuclear program recently came to a head. Following formal criticism from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Tehran threatened to commission thousands of new centrifuges for uranium enrichment. Iran is currently enriching uranium to a purity level of 60 percent; according to experts, more than 90 percent is required for nuclear weapons.
According to Iran's government, the nuclear program is only used for civilian purposes. In 2018, then US President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew from the Vienna nuclear deal, which was intended to restrict Iran's program and ease sanctions in return. Since then, the Islamic Republic has no longer strictly adhered to the conditions. Talks to revive a nuclear deal have been on ice for years.
