The Israeli Ambassador to Switzerland, Ifat Reshef, visited Jewish institutions in Endingen and Lengnau on Tuesday. Accompanied by Aargauer Ständerat Thierry Burkart, Reshef said it was important to her to be in contact with the Jewish communities of Switzerland. Endingen and Lengnau in the Aargauer Surbtal have a unique historical significance as the cradle of Swiss Judaism. During the visit, a memorial service was held in the synagogue of Endingen to commemorate the victims of the Middle East conflict. Other stops included the Jewish cemetery, the synagogue of Lengnau, and the Israeli retirement home Margoa in Lengnau. The visit also included a tour of the property on the village square of Lengnau, where the "Doppeltür" meeting center of the association is to be built by 2025.
The Jews had been expelled from the Swiss cities in 1776 and were only allowed to settle in Endingen and Lengnau. After the Jews were granted equal rights and freedom of settlement in the Aargau in 1874, many Jewish families moved to the cities. Today, only a few Jews remain in Endingen and Lengnau.
