The ongoing pro-Palestine protests at Swiss universities are worrying the Swiss Federation of Jewish Communities. It observes with concern that the mood at the universities concerned is clearly escalating.
Universities are democratic institutions where open debates should be cultivated, the Swiss Federation of Jewish Communities (SIG) stated on Wednesday in response to an inquiry from the Keystone-SDA news agency.
"However, the loud voices of the protesters are ideologically radicalized," wrote SIG General Secretary Jonathan Kreutner. They gave the impression that all students shared their positions.
Clearly cross-border anti-Semitic statements such as "From the river to the sea" are not to be tolerated and are not in line with the values of a university.
Protesters temporarily occupied buildings at ETH Zurich, EPF Lausanne and the University of Geneva on Tuesday. Protests continued at the universities of Lausanne and Geneva on Wednesday.
