Although inflation in Switzerland remained stable in October, it remains a topic of debate. Adriel Jost of the Institute for Swiss Economic Policy (IWP) believes that higher energy and rent prices will not allow things to calm down. In his opinion, however, this should not have a major impact on the population's consumption behavior.
Large movements are not to be expected in the coming months, Jost said in an interview with AWP on Thursday. "But there will be a tendency for inflation in Switzerland to rise again." He justifies this with higher electricity prices, higher energy prices in general or rising rents. "Inflation rates will tend to rise again.
Referring to consumption in Switzerland, which has been a pillar of the economy so far, and the recently dampened consumer sentiment, Jost said, "There is a big discrepancy between consumer sentiment and actual consumer behavior. Higher prices have a negative impact on consumer sentiment because nobody likes that."
However, since there was still sufficient income and the job situation still seemed secure in large parts of the economy, people were buying products or services even at higher prices.
