The Swiss energy company BKW has announced that all 418 used fuel elements from the Mühleberg nuclear power plant have been successfully transported to the interim storage facility in Würenlingen AG. This marks an important milestone in the decommissioning process, as the plant no longer poses a nuclear hazard without nuclear fuel. The removal of the fuel elements has reduced the radioactivity in the plant by more than 99%. The decommissioning of the Mühleberg nuclear power plant began in December 2019. The next phase of the decommissioning process can now begin, as the plant is now free of nuclear fuel. This phase will involve the removal of all remaining radioactivity from the plant and the surrounding area. Once this is complete, the area can be used for other purposes from 2034.nnnnnnnnnnnn
