The Leibstadt nuclear power plant in the canton of Aargau will be taken off the grid next Monday for its annual overhaul. This will involve replacing 124 of a total of 648 fuel elements. According to the operator, the interruption to production is expected to last one month.
In addition, one control rod and 15 control rod drives will be replaced, announced Kernkraftwerk Leibstadt AG (KKL) on Thursday. The overhaul will also focus on maintenance and inspection work.
This year, the high-pressure turbine, the three low-pressure turbines and the reactor recirculation pumps installed in 2021 will be examined in particular. The power plant is also using the overhaul to update the control technology for safety and auxiliary systems.
Around 1200 external specialists will support the nuclear power plant employees during the annual overhaul. The Leibstadt nuclear power plant on the Rhine border with Germany began commercial operation in 1984.
