Last year, the Leibstadt nuclear power plant in the canton of Aargau fed the third-highest amount of electricity into the grid in its almost 40-year history. The operator attributes this to the modernization of the condenser and reactor recirculation system.

Specifically, the plant produced a net 9677 gigawatt hours (GWh) of electricity, as announced by Kernkraftwerk Leibstadt AG (KKL) on Friday. Outside of the four weeks of maintenance work, the nuclear power plant was operating at full load, apart from a brief interruption due to a turbine shutdown.

According to KKL, the annual production of 2023 corresponds to around one seventh of the total electricity production in Switzerland and the electricity consumption of around two million households.

Since commissioning in December 1984, KKL says it has invested around 1.5 billion Swiss francs in modernizing and maintaining the plant. The operator intends to invest another one billion Swiss francs in further renovation projects until at least 2045 to ensure reliable electricity production, according to the press release.
