St. Gallen main station was cordoned off on Saturday evening because of a suspicious object. The object eventually turned out to be an electrical appliance that had not been disposed of properly. The closure was lifted at 20.30.

Shortly before 7 p.m., the St. Gallen city police received a report of the object at Gaiserbahnhof, according to a statement. The object was flashing and cables were visible. As the object could not be classified as harmless on site, the area around Gaiserbahnhof was cordoned off.

Public and private transport had to be diverted, and the Appenzell railroads had to suspend operations in the area of the station. The station square near the bus stops was not affected by the closure.

An explosives specialist from the St.Gallen city police seized the object after consultation with other specialists.

According to the police, there was no danger to the public at any time. Various patrols of the St.Gallen city police, employees of the St.Gallen cantonal police and a team from the St.Gallen rescue service were deployed.
