The bargain hunting around Black Friday could result in lower sales this year. According to a survey by Salesforce Switzerland, 40 percent of consumers plan to spend less during the discount days than last year.
The lower propensity to spend is primarily due to rising fixed costs. This "disruptive factor" was cited by almost a third of respondents as the reason for their subdued consumer behavior on the campaign days. In addition, almost half of those surveyed stated that they did not currently need anything, as can be seen from the survey published on Tuesday.
However, the picture is mixed depending on age. Around a third of 15-29-year-olds stated that they are saving for something else and therefore do not plan to spend money around Black Friday. A further third of this age category reportedly want to "consume less in general".
Meanwhile, the generation of 45 to 59-year-olds shows the most stable purchasing behavior. Here, more than half (56%) plan to spend the same amount as last year. In general, according to Salesforce Switzerland, shoppers are once again mainly targeting electronics items this year, followed by fashion and furniture.
Meanwhile, toy retailers can hope that sales will remain high. According to the toy trends for Christmas 2024, sales should at least remain stable compared to the previous year. According to market researcher GfK, the first three quarters of the year saw an increase of 0.8%.
Lego, licensed toys and board games continue to be particularly popular. The Swiss Toy Association (SVS) asked Migros, Manor, Coop, Galaxus and Spielkiste about the first Christmas trends for this year. This corresponds to around 60 percent of the entire toy market in Switzerland.
